DESCRIPTION: Up to 11mm in length. A tough looking chap whose main ground colour is a variable mottled mixture of browns, greys, blacks, creams and dirty greens. The wide thorax is noticeably keeled and curves over the abdomen although not beyond it. The wings are short although a rare long winged form occurs in the Cairngorms. BEHAVIOUR: Feeds on lichen and mosses and is flightless. All adults die off by mid-summer usually after egg laying. DISTRIBUTION: Common throughout Britain. HABITAT: Unshaded areas with sparse vegetation and patches of bare earth. PERIOD: Nymphs appear from May to July. Adults may be found at any time of the year.
